Rodea

January 17, 2035 - airspace over Nevada

Rodea was swaying from side to side in time to the light turbulence above the Nevada desert. She was sitting with Boozta, Stinger, Susan, and Mike in the huge Air Force turboprop airplane on the left row of seats, which stretched from the cockpit to the ramp in the rear. In front of them, secured to the transport plane’s floor, was the container that held the sphere.

Except for the terrible loss of Putra, the extraction from Manado had been surprisingly smooth. They had returned to Badjo Kima by jeep, with one enforced stop because the vehicle had lost power and refused to start up again. Still, they were on their way just 10 minutes later. Two large Zodiacs were waiting for them at the edge of the village, and the marines lurking in the undergrowth hadn’t escaped her practiced eyes.

From the Gerald R. Ford they were taken by helicopter to a secret Air Force base in the southern Philippines, where they and the artifact had been loaded into the Globemaster in which they were now sitting. Then they had flown to Hawaii, refueled, and had immediately continued toward Nevada.

The death of the Indonesian fisherman had left her dejected for a long while, but then she had once again found the switch in her head she used to suppress her guilt. She didn’t know how she had come by this ability, but it had often helped her during her 20-year career. She had done things much worse than using Putra Buring Bule in an operation like the one she had just commanded, and she would do so again.

Not everyone got the chance to do something meaningful and to serve a higher purpose. In his case, he had made the sacrifice for his family, who would otherwise have died in that village. Now they were being taken to America, and at least they would survive. Of course she would have preferred for him to go with them, but he had voluntarily taken her offer.

Before boarding the plane in the Philippines she had been given a tablet by a CIA liaison officer with the latest information from the agency. Rodea had gone through it thoroughly, and the picture it painted of her homeland was terrifying. Only six days had passed since the barrier had appeared but its effects were already enormous.

Because photosynthesis had ceased across the world, agriculture had collapsed within just two days.

It was now impossible to navigate the oceans, with no GPS and no stars in the sky, and air travel was also a thing of the past because the infrastructure used by all the airlines relied on satellites.

The markets had closed because futures trading was now impossible.

TV and the internet no longer functioned, cell phone networks had collapsed, and gasoline was being rationed.

There was unrest in all metropolitan areas, including bloody conflict between demonstrators and rioters on one side and police and National Guard on the other.
